DESCRIPTION:The University of Manchester Pro Bono Society are proud to take part and celebrate Pro Bono Week 2025.  \nAs part of highlighting ‘Pro Bono in Action’ \, we will be hosting a panel talk on the 7th of November with lawyers from Young Legal Aid Lawyers (YLAL). Speakers include: \nAvaia Nightingale Williams – Pupil Barrister\, Parklane Plowden Chambers (Family law barrister\, currently engages in substantial pro bono advocacy via Advocate) \nSian Waldron – Criminal law solicitor\, currently engages in substantial pro bono work. \nThe panel will be broadly cover the following topics: \n– Introduction of both the lawyers \n– History from being a law student to working in pro bono \n– How does pro bono work differ from billable work? Why is it more satisfying? (drawing on personal examples from the panel members) \n– How does YLAL in particular facilitate that avenue for pro bono? \n– What can students do to engage in pro bono from an early stage of their legal journey? \n– How do you portray pro bono work when applying for legal roles? \nThis event is for University of Manchester students only.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at Francis Taylor Building in the Temple on Friday 7 November 2025 at 6:30pm\, for an informal introduction over drinks to the Sierra Leonean organisation Citizens’ Barray.  Eleanor Thompson\, lawyer at Citizens’ Barray\, will be present and is keen to introduce those with an interest in the legal system in Sierra Leone to her new organisation. \nCitizens’ Barray is a platform for informing\, organizing\, and innovating\, so young Sierra Leonean citizens can lead their communities in community action to challenge the harms they face and shape equitable\, just systems in Sierra Leone. Citizens’ Barray believes that lasting and transformative justice solutions are possible when citizens are informed and engaged\, i.e. when democracy works. \nInvitation Only.
