SUMMARY:Scotland Legal Roundtable - TrustLaw
DESCRIPTION:TrustLaw invites you to attend its virtual Legal Roundtable: Strengthening pro bono in Scotland. We will share our Championing Pro Bono Guide and facilitate a conversation about helpful practices as well as challenges and lessons learnt. We will also hear about current pro bono legal opportunities in Scotland as well as a pro bono case study. \nTrustLaw is the Thomson Reuters Foundation’s free global pro bono legal service. We connect the best lawyers in the world to non-profits and social enterprises working to create social and environmental change. We work with legal teams\, both law firms and in-house teams\, globally to help spread the practice of pro bono worldwide.  \nAs part of our work\, we help assess what pro bono legal teams are doing already (if any) and offer resources to make it easier to do more pro bono. Earlier this year\, we launched our Championing Pro Bono Guide\, which covers a range of ways lawyers can assess and strengthen their team’s pro bono work. It includes a checklist to assess your firm’s pro bono practice\, as well as resources on debunking common pro bono myths and tips to make the most of your pro bono experience.  \nDuring this virtual Legal Roundtable\, we will introduce our Guide and facilitate a conversation about ways to assess and strengthen your firm’s pro bono work. The virtual session will be an inclusive space to share helpful practices and lessons learnt together with lawyers from firms of all sizes and at different stages of their pro bono journey. It will be hosted under the Chatham House Rules. \nWe will also hear from TrustLaw\, Inspiring Scotland and the University of Edinburgh on current pro bono opportunities in Scotland\, as well as learnings from a pro bono matter in support of a Scottish non-profit.

SUMMARY:'The Ethics of Pro Bono' seminar - LawWorks & University of Bristol
DESCRIPTION:“For the things we have to learn before we can do them\, we learn by doing them.” Aristotle\, Ethics \nThis half day seminar\, run jointly by LawWorks and University of Bristol Law School\, looks at the ethics of pro bono. This goes beyond the “codes of conduct” that bind the legal professions\, and will discuss the moral principles and motivations of working to improve access to justice through clinics and clinical legal education\, as well as the practical challenges of ethics for pro bono clinics. \nIt will be of value to all those (whether you’re a researcher\, clinic co-ordinator or practitioner) interested in ethical questions that may arise in a pro bono context – both in theory and practice.  \n9 am – Introduction/welcome \nProfessor Stephen Mayson – the ethics landscape in light of his report on the “Independent Review of Legal Services Regulation”.  \n9.15 – 10.15am – Panel session 1: Doing legal ethics \nEvery day pro bono clinics put ethics into practice – helping for free those needing legal advice\, responding to a growing need\, and serving the public good (“pro bono publico”). The introduction session will hear reflections on the ethics of pro bono\, and the positive story that clinics have to tell.    \nChair – John Peake (University of Bristol) \nPanellists:\nJames Sandbach (LawWorks)\nElaine Hall (Northumbria University)\nNathan Fitzpatrick (Law Centres Network)\nVictoria Channing (Simmons & Simmons) \nBreak \n10.30 – 12pm – Panel session 2: Clinical practice in an ethical context \nRunning pro bono clinics can be challenging\, there are issues of regulation\, university governance\, training\, support and sustainability to navigate – ethics matter\, clients matter\, and volunteers matter. The panel will discuss practical challenges within an ethics landscape\, and panellists will consider how ethics\, standards\, regulation and education intersect. Panellists will then move into smaller Q & A breakout rooms with attendees to discuss these issues in more detail\, raise challenges\, air frustrations and consider solutions. \nChair – Richard Pitkethly (LawWorks) \nPanellists:\nRichard Moorhead (University of Exeter)\nOmar Madhloom and Andrew Charlesworth (University of Bristol)\nJane Jarman (Nottingham Trent University)\nTim Cave (East Greenwich Legal Advice Clinic)\nValerie Robertson (The Law Society of England and Wales) \n11.50 am – 12pm – Wrap up\, next steps and close \nJohn Peake (University of Bristol)
