SUMMARY:"For Sama" Virtual Viewing - University of Edinburgh Pro Bono Society
DESCRIPTION:*University of Edinburgh students & members only* \nWe will be streaming the documentary via Microsoft Teams. You will be invited to join a Team before the event date. Please make sure you can access Teams through your University of Edinburgh email address and that you are using the same email address to register for your ticket on Eventbrite. \n\n\nPlease click here to donate to Indigo Volunteers via our Golden Giving page and find out more about Indigo Volunteers by clicking on the link to go to their website. \n\n\n“For Sama” is a documentary film surrounding the 5 year journey of filmmaker and journalist Waad al-Kateab and her daughter\, Sama\, during the Syrian Civil War. As one of the BAFTA”s most nominated feature documentary\, “For Sama” has been said to be deeply moving and powerful. We are wanting to air this documentary to educate our members and ourselves\, on the on-going Syrian Civil War and how devastating and impactful it is\, whilst raising money for an organisation that helps provide volunteers to support these type of crises. Indigo Volunteers is a charity that assists with humanitarian projects\, including the refugee crisis. As the Pro Bono Society aims at promoting access to justice\, we are creating this fundraiser to help support Indigo Volunteers in their goal for providing volunteers to help assist in these crises across the globe. \nWe are wanting to promote this fundraiser with Indigo Volunteers with this primary launch event for Pro Bono Week UK 2020 with the documentary viewing\, but we will be continuing to help raise money through other initiatives\, such as an upcoming virtual baking challenge that will take place across our social media accounts.

SUMMARY:Pro Bono and the Sustainable Development Goals – home and abroad - LawWorks & A4ID
DESCRIPTION:In 2015\, the United Nations Member States adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development\, underpinned by 17 key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The goals represent targeted areas for global improvement and broadly relate to areas such as health\, education\, equality and environmental sustainability – with ambitious goals to end poverty\, protect the planet\, and ensure prosperity for all by 2030. \nLaw firms and legal practitioners both in the UK and internationally undertake a substantial amount of pro bono work aimed at reducing poverty which can contribute to the realisation of these goals; whilst the SDGs are often seen as benchmarks for international development work\, many of the SDG’s – for example SDGs 10\, 11 and 16 – ‘reduced inequalities’\, ‘sustainable cities and communities’ and ‘justice and strong institutions’ – are equally relevant to domestic pro bono in the UK and the challenges we face in recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic. \nThis panel session which will take place in Pro Bono Week will discuss the crossover and relevance of the SDG’s to pro bono work both in the UK and internationally\, including pro bono work supporting NGOs from small charities to wider global civil society alliances. Law firms as business entities also have important responsibilities to ensure that their own operations can further the SDGs\, particularly with respect to diversity and inclusion\, the environment\, supply-chain awareness\, and community engagement. From volunteering through legal advice clinics which serve vulnerable communities and support access to justice – to using legal skills to build capacity in civil society\, pro bono has an role to play both in the UK and globally to strengthen commitments to achieving these goals. \nChair\, Baroness Scotland QC\, Secretary General of the Commonwealth. \nPanellists \n\nTom Dunn\, Pro Bono Director\, Clifford Chance\nSung-Hyui Park\, Senior Associate\, Bates Wells\nNaina Patel\, Barrister Blackstone Chambers\nYasmin Batliwala\, Chief Executive\, Advocates for International Development (A4ID)\nJames Sandbach\, Director of Policy\, LawWorks\nTom Tugendhat MP\, Chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee\n\nThis is a joint event put together by LawWorks and A4ID. \nAll those with an interest in pro bono and the SDG\, or if you want to find out more about the SDGs and their application to pro bono\, are encouraged to attend. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Pro Bono in Wales: Opportunities for all
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate Pro Bono Week 2020 and the efforts of all those in the private legal and third sectors offering free legal advice to our local communities\, this free online event will mark the achievements of the sector – and\, importantly\, highlight opportunities for lawyers to get involved in life-changing free legal advice during the pandemic.\nAs free legal advice clinics have started to reopen and offer support in new ways to communities in Wales – and with some new clinics opening – we thought Pro Bono Week 2020 was an excellent opportunity to showcase how lawyers can get involved – even if they only have the bare minimum of time to give to Pro Bono – and explain the benefits of getting involved\, at any stage of your legal career. More on Pro Bono Week 2020 can be found at the foot of this page. #WeDoProBono. \nThis FREE event is hosted by Legal News Wales\, LawWorks Cymru\, AltraLaw and The Law Society Wales and will be facilitated via Zoom. \nWhat to expect\nMy Pro Bono journey in Wales: We’ll hear from lawyers who have significant experience in Pro Bono work but with varied professional backgrounds and at different stages of their career. They’ll share how Pro Bono has enhanced and motivated them\, both professionally and personally\, and why all lawyers should consider this – at any stage of their career. \nHow legal advice clinics have fared during the pandemic and opportunities for all lawyers: A panel of Welsh legal advice clinics\, charities and LawWorks Cymru will also join us to outline the Pro Bono initiatives and opportunities available to help you on your – or your colleagues’ – Pro Bono journey. This is especially important as there are new and perhaps less known clinics working hard to support local communities in Wales\, and they need help. \nNot all the opportunities involved clinic support\, as LawWorks Cymru will explain. An unexpected outcome of the Coronavirus pandemic is the normalisation of remote support and guidance\, which offers time-poor lawyers a way to help\, and make a real difference while broadening their experience and skill sets. \nProgramme\n\nWelcome from Emma Waddingham\, Editor of Legal News Wales\nNathan Vidini\, Founder of AltraLaw introduces our Keynote Speaker: Acting Regional Employment Judge\, Sian Davies\nMy Pro Bono Journey in Wales: \n\nDaniela Mahapatra\, Deputy Director\, NWSSP Legal & Risk (profile)\nJonathan Rhys Williams\, Trainee Solicitor\, Watkins & Gunn (profile)\nNathan Vidini\, Founder\, AltraLaw (profile)\nNia Godsmark\, Peter Lynn & Partners (profile)\n\n\n\n\nLegal Advice Clinic Panel:\n\nAberystwyth Uni Veteran’s Clinic: Dr Olaoluwa Olusanya\, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Law and Criminology (clinic profile) (speaker profile)\nSwansea Law Clinic: Professor Richard Owen\, Legal Studies\, Swansea University (clinic profile) (speaker profile)\nCardiff Lawyers Care: Clive Thomas\, Cardiff & District Law Society and Managing Partner\, Watkins & Gunn (profile)\, and The Wallich\nELIPS (Employment Litigant in Person Support) (scheme profile)\nRhondda Cynon Taff Citizens Advice: Ashley Comley\, CEO (clinic profile)\n\n\n\n\nAlternative opportunities for Pro Bono in the pandemic: Martin Barnes\, Chief Executive\, LawWorks\, joined by his colleagues Fatima Bhula\, Pro Bono Connect\, and Matt Hunt\, Not-for-Profits Programme.\nQ&A\nEvent close (6:45pm)

SUMMARY:Scotland Legal Roundtable - TrustLaw
DESCRIPTION:TrustLaw invites you to attend its virtual Legal Roundtable: Strengthening pro bono in Scotland. We will share our Championing Pro Bono Guide and facilitate a conversation about helpful practices as well as challenges and lessons learnt. We will also hear about current pro bono legal opportunities in Scotland as well as a pro bono case study. \nTrustLaw is the Thomson Reuters Foundation’s free global pro bono legal service. Earlier this year\, we launched our Championing Pro Bono Guide\, which covers a range of ways lawyers can assess and strengthen their team’s pro bono work. SUMMARY:'The Ethics of Pro Bono' seminar - LawWorks & University of Bristol
DESCRIPTION:“For the things we have to learn before we can do them\, we learn by doing them.” Aristotle\, Ethics \nThis half day seminar\, run jointly by LawWorks and University of Bristol Law School\, looks at the ethics of pro bono. This goes beyond the “codes of conduct” that bind the legal professions\, and will discuss the moral principles and motivations of working to improve access to justice through clinics and clinical legal education\, as well as the practical challenges of ethics for pro bono clinics. \nIt will be of value to all those (whether you’re a researcher\, clinic co-ordinator or practitioner) interested in ethical questions that may arise in a pro bono context – both in theory and practice.  \n9 am – Introduction/welcome \nProfessor Stephen Mayson – the ethics landscape in light of his report on the “Independent Review of Legal Services Regulation”.  \n9.15 – 10.15am – Panel session 1: Doing legal ethics \nEvery day pro bono clinics put ethics into practice – helping for free those needing legal advice\, responding to a growing need\, and serving the public good (“pro bono publico”). The introduction session will hear reflections on the ethics of pro bono\, and the positive story that clinics have to tell.    \nChair – John Peake (University of Bristol) \nPanellists:\nJames Sandbach (LawWorks)\nElaine Hall (Northumbria University)\nNathan Fitzpatrick (Law Centres Network)\nVictoria Channing (Simmons & Simmons) \nBreak \n10.30 – 12pm – Panel session 2: Clinical practice in an ethical context \nRunning pro bono clinics can be challenging\, there are issues of regulation\, university governance\, training\, support and sustainability to navigate – ethics matter\, clients matter\, and volunteers matter. The panel will discuss practical challenges within an ethics landscape\, and panellists will consider how ethics\, standards\, regulation and education intersect. Panellists will then move into smaller Q & A breakout rooms with attendees to discuss these issues in more detail\, raise challenges\, air frustrations and consider solutions. \nChair – Richard Pitkethly (LawWorks) \nPanellists:\nRichard Moorhead (University of Exeter)\nOmar Madhloom and Andrew Charlesworth (University of Bristol)\nJane Jarman (Nottingham Trent University)\nTim Cave (East Greenwich Legal Advice Clinic)\nValerie Robertson (The Law Society of England and Wales) \n11.50 am – 12pm – Wrap up\, next steps and close \nJohn Peake (University of Bristol)
