SUMMARY:"Using the Law for Public Benefit" with John Whitmore – University of Leicester Pro Bono Society – [internal]
DESCRIPTION:This session is only open to members of the University of Leicester Pro Bono Society  \nIn the 1980s\, John was Legal Director of the Commission for Racial Equality (a predecessor body to the Equality and Human Rights Commission) and afterwards as a barrister\, he fought racial discrimination cases all over the country for years. He will talk about successful cases he acted in\, for example trainee solicitors against law firms and legal academics against his University where a record award for injury to feelings was made when the tribunal wing members outvoted the legal chair!  \nBack then such cases got enormous publicity in the press and when he won the first case for an Irish man subjected to harassment\, The Daily Mail was so incensed at this it ran a failed campaign to abolish what were then called industrial tribunals.  \nJohn has also hosted a talk in Maragret Thatcher’s Office. He was a Professor of Law in the 1970\, at University of Leicester and sowed seeds of what is now our Pro Bono Society. An absolutely incredible individual\, this is not one to miss!

SUMMARY:Virtual volunteering with special guest\, Regional Employment Judge Wade - ELIPS
DESCRIPTION:The Employment Lawyers’ Association’s Pro Bono Committee would like to invite all ELA members and other interested individuals to join a panel discussion about the virtual volunteering opportunities available to its members and in particular\, ELIPS and Mumsnet online clinics.   \nELIPS (the Employment Tribunal Litigant in Person Scheme)\, one of ELA’s most successful pro bono projects\, is now provided via an online platform\, and covers the London Central\, Cardiff\, Bristol\, Midlands West\, Leeds and Manchester Employment Tribunals. You will hear from ELA members who have volunteered and how this has provided both personal and professional benefits and opportunities; student volunteers; and an ELA member who has taken responsibility for expanding the coverage of ELIPS to her local Employment Tribunal. We are delighted that Regional Employment Judge Wade will also be joining the panel\, to talk about the difference that ELIPS can make to litigants in person. \nMumsnet online legal advice clinics are held quarterly with volunteers providing online legal advice on maternity and parental rights at work. Clinics are managed and supervised by Maternity Action\, giving volunteers an opportunity to learn more about this area of law and contribute to tackling pregnancy discrimination. You will hear from one of the ELA volunteers who regularly takes part in Mumsnet clinics who will explain how they operate and why she finds this work so fulfilling.  \nPlease submit any questions that you have about these volunteering opportunities\, or any others to: elips@elaweb.org.uk. \nContact info@elaweb.org.uk to register to join.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED: Rule of Law & Access to Justice: where do we go from here? – Pro Bono Week Committee & LexisNexis
DESCRIPTION:POSTPONED: This event has been postponed\, due to ill health on the part of a number of the speakers. To receive details of the event when a new date is confirmed\, please follow the PBW Eventbrite profile. \n  \nFollowing on from successful Rule of Law events in Pro Bono Week 2020 and Volunteers Week 2021\, our stellar panel returns! Register to attend via the Eventbrite link: https://ruleoflaw2021.eventbrite.co.uk \nTiming: \nOnline attendees: start 5.30pm\, finish 7pm. \nIn person attendees: arrive from 5pm\, panel starts 5.30pm\, drinks & nibbles from 7pm. \nPanellists are: \n\nIain Anderson (Executive Chairman\, Cicero Group)\nI. Stephanie Boyce (President of the Law Society of England & Wales)\,\nBaroness Hale of Richmond (former President of the UK Supreme Court)\,\nJames Harper (Executive Sponsor Rule of Law\, LexisNexis)\nBaroness Helena Kennedy QC (Director of the IBA Human Rights Institute) \n\nThere can be few times in the modern history of the UK where the Rule of Law has remained at the forefront of public attention and discussion for such a sustained period – whether it is governmental “tinkering” with judicial review\, the backlog in the court system\, to some concerning narrative about lawyers practicing in the immigration and criminal justice systems. \nAs important as that focus has been\, it often leaves a hugely important question unanswered: where do we go from here? \nLawyers almost universally see the Rule of Law as fundamental\, but that seems some way off outside of the profession? If we are to protect the Rule of Law (and drive an environment where upholding the Rule of Law is seen as non-negotiable)\, the public at large need to feel the same way. \nHaving considered this question previously\, the panel will return to give an update on the “state of the union” of the Rule of Law in the UK. From there\, we will turn to continue our debate on what can be done to begin to deliver this. Can the law\, and justice be rebranded? Can businesses be made to care and champion the Rule of Law? What\, or who might get the public to value access to justice? \nRead an overview of the November 2020 event here and the June 2021 event here. \nYou can watch the full panel debate from Volunteers Week 2021 on YouTube (this panel included James Harper (LexisNexis) as a speaker and Catherine Baksi (award-winning journalist) was the chair): \n \nYou can watch the full panel debate from Pro Bono Week 2020 on YouTube (this panel included Law Society then-President David Greene\, and barrister Matthew Ryder QC (Matrix Chambers). James Harper (LexisNexis) was the chair):

SUMMARY:Poverty and Pro Bono - LawWorks
DESCRIPTION:In this Pro Bono week\, we are look back over the last 20 years of pro bono and forward to the next 20 – after the disruption of Covid\, and with so much unmet need what should be the priority for legal pro bono? \nThere are significant indicators that poverty may increase in future months given the upward pressures on prices\, housing\, childcare and living costs\, the withdrawal of furlough and the Universal Credit uplift\, combined with economic uncertainty and increasing personal debt levels. Most social welfare law issues remain outside of the scope of legal aid\, but are these the areas that pro bono should be focussed on going forwards? How can pro bono make a bigger policy impact on welfare rights\, serve those vulnerable to the on-going effects of the pandemic and push for positive changes in law and policy? \nThe focus of the session will be on UK rather than global poverty\, and where pro bono can make an impact. Subjects that will be covered in the discussion include:- \n\n\nThe development of pro bono projects working on benefit appeals;\npro bono and employment rights for low paid and insecure workers alongside access to support and legal education; and\nengaging lawyers in policy reform.\n\n\nThe panel of speakers includes: \n\nJames Sandbach\, London Citizens Advice\nEmma Lough\, Director\, Lawyers Against Poverty\nAnela Anwar Chief Executive\, Z2K \nClaire Hall\, Lawyer\, CPAG\n\nRegister at the Eventbrite link below.

SUMMARY:Rule of Law & Access to Justice: where do we go from here? - Pro Bono Week Committee & LexisNexis
DESCRIPTION:Rule of Law and Access to Justice: where do we go from here? \nDoes the law need a rebrand? \nThere can be few times in the modern history of the UK where the Rule of Law has been at the forefront of public attention and discussion – from the Internal Market Bill to the independent panel on Judicial Review\, from the backlog in the court system to comments on the role lawyers play in the immigration and criminal justice system.  There is no lack of challenge to the Rule of Law.  But there is also significant comment on these challenges.  \nAs important as that commentary is\, it often leaves a hugely important question unanswered: where do we go from here? \nIt is easy to get agreement among lawyers that the Rule of Law is fundamental\, but is that true outside of the profession?  If we are to protect the Rule of Law (and drive an environment where upholding the Rule of Law is seen as non-negotiable)\, the public at large need to feel the same way.  \nThe panel will give a brief “state of the union” of the Rule of Law in the UK.  From there\, we will turn to consider what can be done to begin to deliver this.  Does the law\, the Rule of Law\, and justice need rebranding?  What\, or who might get the public to value the fundamental importance of the Rule of Law and the important access to justice that gives them?   \nPanellists are: \n\nIain Anderson (Executive Chairman\, Cicero Group)\nDavid Greene (President of the Law Society of England & Wales)\,\nBaroness Hale of Richmond (former President of the UK Supreme Court)\,\nBaroness Helena Kennedy QC (Director of the IBA Human Rights Institute) and\nMatthew Ryder QC (barrister and former Deputy Mayor of London (social integration\, social mobility and community engagement)). \n\nThis event is jointly led by the Pro Bono Week Committee and LexisNexis and is timed to coincide with the finish of Pro Bono Week.  It is part of LexisNexis’s central objective of advancing the Rule of Law around the world – further information can be found here.  For further information about the events in Pro Bono Week\, please click here. \nOur thanks to Augusta Ventures for kindly hosting this webinar and for their support of the National Pro Bono Centre and Pro Bono Week.
